Chiara Lo Prete joined Penn State as an Assistant Professor of Energy Economics in July 2014. Her research focuses on strategic interactions and price formation in multi-settlement wholesale electricity markets, market design of electric distribution networks, and evaluation of environmental policies in the electricity sector.
Before joining Penn State, Dr. Lo Prete was a Ziff Environmental Fellow at the Harvard University Center for the Environment. She earned a B.A. in Economics from LUISS University (Rome, Italy), a M.A. in Energy Economics from the Scuola Mattei (Milan, Italy), and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University.
Prior to returning to academia to pursue her Ph.D., Dr. Lo Prete worked for the energy company Eni, where she focused on the analysis of energy and environmental policies for the electric power, natural gas and automotive sectors in Europe and the United States.

Research Summary: 
Research interests include energy industry restructuring, pricing issues and market design in the United States. Her current work focuses on equilibrium models of price manipulation in multi-settlement electricity markets; optimization models for the analysis of economic, environmental and reliability impacts of microgrid penetration in power networks; economic models assessing price and welfare effects of natural gas pipeline expansion projects.
